Description: The snow leopard (Panthera uncia) is a species of cat native to the mountain ranges of South Asia & Central Asia. Snow leopards live 3,000 - 5,500 m (9,800 - 18,000 ft) above sea level in the rocky mountain ranges of Central & South Asia. It is estimated that 3,500 - 7,000 snow leopards exist in the wild. Snow Leopards weigh 27 - 55 kg (60 - 120 lb). Their Body length ranges from 75 - 130 cm (30 - 50 in), with the tail adding a further 80 - 100 cm (31 - 39 in) to that length. They stand about 60 cm (24 in) at the shoulder. Snow leopards have long thick, smoky gray to yellowish tan colored fur, with dark gray to black open rosettes & spots on their body, legs & tail & whitish underparts. Their eyes are green or gray in color. Snow leopards' tails are long & flexible, helping them to maintain their balance, which is very important in the rocky terrain they inhabit. Their tails are also very thick due to storage of fats & are very thickly covered with fur which allows them to be used like a blanket to protect their faces when asleep. Snow leopards cannot roar. The morphological features of the larynx, necessary for roaring are absent in the snow leopard. Snow leopard vocalizations include hisses, chuffing, mews, growls & wailing. The snow leopard leads a largely solitary life & is crepuscular, being most active at dawn & dusk. Snow leopards are carnivores & actively hunt their prey, though, like all cats, they are opportunistic feeders, eating whatever meat they can find, including carrion & domestic livestock. Despite being able to kill animals 3 times their size, snow lepards are the least aggressive of all the big cats & readily abandon their kills when threatened & may not even defend themselves when attacked. The snow leopard is listed on the Red List of Threatened Species as globally Endangered.
