Description: The Atlantic Bobtail squid (Sepiola atlantica) is a species of bobtail squid of the order Sepiolida in the family Sepiolidae, genus (Sepiola). It is native to the northeastern Atlantic Ocean (65N - 35N), from Iceland, the Faroe Islands & western Norway to the Moroccan coast. Atlantic Bobtail squid (Sepiola atlantica) are cephalopods & are closely related to cuttlefish. Atlantic Bobtail squid tend to have a rounder mantle than cuttlefish & have no cuttlebone. They have 8 s*ckered arms & 2 tentacles & are generally quite small with both the Males & females only growing to around 21 mm in mantle length. Atlantic Bobtail squid have a symbiotic relationship with bioluminescent bacteria (Vibrio fischeri), which inhabit a special light organ in the squid''s mantle. The bacteria are fed a sugar & amino acid solution by the squid & in return hide the squid''s silhouette when viewed from below by matching the amount of light hitting the top of the mantle. The organ contains filters which may alter the wavelength of luminescence closer to that of downwelling moonlight & starlight; a lens with biochemical similarities to the squids eye to diffuse the bacterial luminescence & a reflector which directs the light ventrally. Sepiolida are iteroparous & a female might lay several clutches, each of 1-400 eggs, over her estimated one year long lifetime. The eggs are covered with sand & left without parental care. Symbiosis with V. fischeri from the surrounding seawater is initiated immediately upon hatching & the bacterias colonisation of the juvenile light-organ induces morphological changes in the squid that lead to maturity.
