Description: Berrys Bobtail Squid (Euprymna berryi) are a species of Cephalopods of the order Sepiolida in the family Nematocarcinoidea, genus Euprymna. Berrys Bobtail Squid (Euprymna berryi) are found in Coastal bays, Lagoons in the Western Pacific regions. Berrys Bobtail squid are closely related to cuttlefish. These squid tend to have a rounder mantle than cuttlefish & have no cuttlebone. They have 8 s*ckered arms & 2 tentacles & are generally quite small with both the Males & females only growing to around 5 cm in mantle length. Berrys Bobtail squid have a symbiotic relationship with bioluminescent bacteria (Vibrio fischeri), which inhabit a special light organ in the squids mantle. The bacteria are fed a sugar & amino acid solution by the squid & in return hide the squids silhouette when viewed from below by matching the amount of light hitting the top of the mantle. The organ contains filters which may alter the wavelength of luminescence closer to that of downwelling moonlight & starlight; a lens with biochemical similarities to the squids eye to diffuse the bacterial luminescence & a reflector which directs the light ventrally. They are iteroparous & a female might lay several clutches, each of 1-400 eggs, over her estimated one year long lifetime. The eggs are covered with sand & left without parental care. Symbiosis with V. fischeri from the surrounding seawater is initiated immediately upon hatching & the bacterias colonisation of the juvenile light-organ induces morphological changes in the squid that lead to maturity. Berrys Bobtail Squid (Euprymna berryi) have a layer of iridescent cells that gives the appearance of alternating blue & green colors. When the chromatop s (the cells with the brown pygment) expand, the iridescence is concealed. During the day they bury themselves in sand to camouflage themselves from predators.
