Description: Ctenop s, commonly known as comb jellies are a phylum of animals that live in marine waters worldwide. Their most distinctive feature is the combs, groups of cilia that they use for swimming. They range from a few millimeters to 1.5 m (59 in) in size. Their bodies consist of a mass of jelly with one layer of cells on the outside & another lining the internal cavity. Almost all ctenop s are predators, taking prey ranging from microscopic larvae & rotifers to the adults of small crustaceans. Ctenop s can eat ten times their own weight in a day. Most species are hermaphrodites & a single animal can produce both eggs & sperm. Fertilization is generally external. The young are generally planktonic & in most species look like miniature cydippids, gradually changing into the adult shape as they grow. In at least some species, juveniles are capable of reproduction before reaching the adult size & shape. The combination of hermaphroditism & early reproduction enables small populations to grow at an explosive rate. Ctenop s are distinguished from all other animals by having colloblasts that capture prey by ing glue on them. The comb rows of most planktonic ctenop s produce a rainbow effect, which is not caused by bioluminescence but by the scattering of light as the combs move. Most species are also bioluminescent, but the light is usually blue or green & can only been seen in darkness.
